QUEEN NANNY OF THE RESURRECTION
48" x 48"
2025, mixed media on canvas
This reimagining of Queen Nanny is a deliberate departure from the widely known depiction on the $500 bill. Instead of a white head wrap, she wears a crown of pumpkin vines in reference to the story about Queen Nanny and Pumpkin Hill. It incorporates Maroon and Akan symbols (akofena, abeng) along with pumpkin in all three states (seed, flower, fruit) and cacoon vine. The moon cycles depicted echo the feminine principle of renewal/death and rebirth/resurrection/cyclicity.
Research and creation of Ancestral Futurism project was generously supported by The Canada Council for the Arts Explore & Create grant, and by the BC Arts Council Individual Artist grant.
