The image of the rainbow serpent winds through many cultures as a powerful symbol of creation, transformation, and renewal. This ancient figure appears in stories from Africa, the Caribbean, Indigenous Australia, Mesoamerica, and South Asia. It moves fluidly between earth and sky, water and spirit, carrying ancestral knowledge and reminding us of the cycles that govern life. Recently, I painted a calabash with this very serpent, blending cultural meanings and sacred materials into a piece meant for prayer and reflection.
The Rainbow Serpent as a Symbol Across Cultures
The rainbow serpent is more than a myth; it is a living symbol that connects diverse traditions. In Indigenous Australian stories, the serpent is a creator being who shaped the land and waterways. It represents fertility and the life-giving power of water. In African and Caribbean cosmologies, serpents often embody transformation and renewal, linking the physical world with the spiritual.
This figure’s movement between river and sky, earth and spirit, shows how life is interconnected. The serpent’s colors, like those of a rainbow, reflect light and hope after storms. It reminds us that transformation often comes through cycles of challenge and growth, much like rain refracting light across the sky.
The Calabash as a Sacred Vessel
The calabash is a gourd that holds deep meaning across the African diaspora. It serves as a container for food, water, and offerings, making it a natural altar piece or prayer bowl. For this piece, I used a Ghanaian calabash, known for its sturdy form and cultural significance. I adorned it with Kenyan cowrie shells, which have long been symbols of wealth, fertility, and spiritual protection. The surface is finished with an annatto-infused damar glaze, giving it a warm, earthy tone. To highlight the serpent’s sacred nature, I applied 24k gold leaf, adding a touch of divine light and reverence.
